During some composing or recording sessions – especially improvisation or single take “live to disk” performances – impossible rules sometimes manifest themselves, as though a phantom conductor appears with their own agenda that is impossible to document with any clarity. I’ve learned it’s best to follow these irrational protocols, as resistance always breaks the piece, and the “conductor” usually knows better than I what the piece wants to become.

These three pieces were subjected to such irrational protocols. They have elements of drone, noise, and (subtly) musique concrete, though in the end even I had trouble distinguishing real vocal sources from phantom voices emanating from formant filters.
